TRANSIENCE Stakeholder workshop in Silesia, Poland

10 Mar 2026
Silesia Workshop

On Tuesday, 10 March 2026, our colleagues from Park Naukowo-Technologiczny Euro-Centrum hosted the second stakeholder engagement workshop on Silesia’s industrial decarbonisation. Our partners from Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy contributed by presenting the latest developments of the Industry Transformation Optimisation Model (ITOM) within the TRANSIENCE framework. The discussion focused on the steel and cement industries, which together account for around 30% of industrial emissions in Poland. These sectors remain both the backbone of Silesia’s economy and a vital source of employment.

The workshop brought together experts from across Silesia’s steel, cement, energy, mining, and heating sectors. Their insights will help ground modelling assumptions in real-world industrial conditions—particularly regarding energy costs, hydrogen availability, the pace of plant modernisation, and pressures from global competition. A key takeaway was participants’ strong interest in advancing industrial modelling that reflects Silesia’s region-specific conditions—particularly the challenges related to energy costs and infrastructure capacity.
